Redesigning your site

When visitors are on your site they don’t want to waste time looking for what they need and they shouldn’t have to. If you are thinking about redesigning your site here are some things to consider.

1. Who are your visitors

Know the people who are visiting your site. If they are not the intended targets then perhaps its time to re-evaluate your marketing efforts. By knowing who your visitors are it will help determine their mindset so your design can support their goal. Accommodating your site to their purpose might create different paths from the home page, which could serve different content for the users need. As an example we will use a bank retirement site, it has three paths for information depending on the age, and stage of savings for retirement. Demographic information has a big influence on your design approach.

2. What are your visitors looking for?

A number of companies sometimes tend to wrongly optimize their website for the content they have, rather than adjusting their web content around the customers need. Find out the information your visitors are looking for on your site and then shape the content around what the users need.

3. Can they find it?

Poorly organized information can make it difficult for your visitors to find the information they want even if it’s offered on your site. Some causes are: unclear link names, site errors, poor navigation, and technical errors. Visitors don’t like to have to play around to discover the information they want. By having basic usability issues resolved it can increase online activity immensely.
